"Do this in remembrance of me." You see this phrase inscribed on the altar at Hope Lutheran Church and you typically hear it in any church that has Holy Communion. But, what exactly do those words mean? What are we supposed to remember? On the night he was betrayed (Maundy Thursday), Jesus took bread and gave it to his disciples saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." (Luke 22:19) He also took the cup and gave it to them saying, "Taking and drink, this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."
